England’s Simon Dyson shot a final round of 66 to win the KLM Open for the third time in six years at Hilversum on Sunday.

The Yorkshireman finished one stroke clear of compatriot David Lynn and two clear of US Open champion Rory McIlroy to join the likes of Severiano Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer in completing a hat-trick of victories at the Dutch event.

It is the second victory of the season for Dyson who also won the Irish Open at the end of July and owed much to a superb finish to his final round.

The 33-year-old produced four birdies in his last seven holes to post a target of 12-under-par which proved to be just out of the reach of the final groups.

«I’m absolutely delighted,» Dyson told Sky Sports. «To be on the same trophy as names like those two (Ballesteros and Langer) three times it’s something special – a dream come true really.

«To win any title once is tough, but to win it three times… it hasn’t really sunk in. It’s a fantastic feeling.

«I’ve been playing some good golf for the last two months but I didn’t think two wins would come along so quickly together.»

Dyson started the final day two behind overnight leaders James Kingston and Gary Orr but, after seeing the final round delayed by an hour due to heavy overnight rain, was quickly into his stride once play did begin with a birdie at the second.

But he quickly gave it back with a bogey at the fifth and, despite another birdie at the seventh, found himself back where he started the day at eight-under after a second bogey at the tough par-four 11th.
